They spent the next hour coordinating. Messages sent to border forces. Intelligence carefully positioned to reach Church officials. Timing orchestrated to create maximum disruption at exactly the right moment.

By early afternoon, reports started flooding in – major demon force spotted, moving toward a farming settlement, Church assistance urgently needed.

Perfect timing.

Damien watched from his study window as Church bells rang emergency summons. Clergy scrambled. The Saintess was called to lead defensive response.

The examination would be postponed.

Elara was safe. Temporarily.

[CRISIS MANAGEMENT: Successful]

[Elara’s exposure prevented (temporary)]

[Church suspicious but lacking proof]

[WARNING: This is delay, not solution]

A knock at his door interrupted his satisfaction.

"Young master?" Margaret’s voice carried concern. "Captain Seria Thornwood is here. She’s demanding to see you. Says it’s urgent."

Damien felt cold assessment settle over him. The warrior woman, here, now. Not coincidence.

"Send her up," he said.

Seria entered with hand on sword hilt and murder in her eyes. She closed the door firmly behind her.

"We need to talk," she said, voice dangerously quiet. "About the Saintess. About demon timing. About exactly what you are."

"That’s quite a list."

"I’ve been investigating you for weeks." Seria pulled out a folder – intelligence reports, witness statements, timelines. "The pattern is undeniable. Every time demons attack, you benefit. You’re either the luckiest man alive, or you’re connected to them somehow."

"Or I’m just effective at responding to threats."

"And the Saintess?" Seria’s voice hardened. "I saw her this morning. She acts differently. Her divine magic feels corrupted according to Mother Superior. And she defends you with suspicious passion." She stepped closer. "What did you do to her?"

[CRISIS: Seria’s investigation reaching critical conclusions]

[Subject has circumstantial evidence suggesting player’s guilt]

[Recommended action: Deflection or elimination]

Damien assessed his options. He could lie, but Seria was too perceptive. He could threaten, but she was too brave to intimidate. He could use force, but that would confirm everything she suspected.

"I’ll tell you what I did," he said quietly. "I helped her remember what being a person feels like. I gave her choices instead of commands. I offered freedom instead of control. Our relationship is consensual, mutual, none of the Church’s business."

"You corrupted her – "

That word again. It was starting to piss him off.

"I freed her from a cage. There’s a difference." Damien’s voice was cold. "And if you’re here to threaten that freedom, Captain, understand – I’ve killed forty-eight demons. You’re skilled, but you’re not a demon. Choose your next move carefully."

Seria’s hand tightened on her sword hilt. "Are you threatening me?"

"I’m clarifying stakes. You want to investigate me? Fine. But leave Elara out of it. She’s made her choice. Respect it or oppose it, but don’t pretend you’re protecting her by removing her agency."

"Her choice is compromised – "

"By what? Being treated well? Having someone see her as human?" Damien stepped closer, and shadows flickered at the edges of his vision – unconscious response to threat. "You’re so convinced I’m evil that you can’t imagine she might genuinely want this."

Seria noticed the shadows. Her expression shifted – fear mixing with confirmation of suspicions.

"That," she said, pointing to the darkness. "That’s not normal. That’s not human."

"No, it’s not." Damien didn’t bother hiding it now. "It’s power I use to kill demons. To protect people. To serve the kingdom’s interests. The source is dark. The purpose is light. Reality isn’t as simple as you want it to be."

"And the Saintess is just acceptable collateral damage?"

"The Saintess is someone important to me." He said it flatly. "Not a target or collateral."

Seria stared at him, clearly trying to reconcile the admission with her suspicions. "Important."

"Yes."

"You’re saying you genuinely care about her."

"I’m saying I’m willing to go to great lengths to protect her." Damien’s voice was absolutely sincere. "So if your investigation threatens her, Captain, you’re not just investigating me. You’re threatening someone I wouldn’t have hurt. Choose your next move accordingly."

[SOCIAL COMBAT: Dangerous Honesty]

[Seria status: Uncertain rather than hostile]

[WARNING: Subject still suspicious but questioning assumptions]

Seria was quiet for a long moment. "I don’t trust you," she said finally. "But I believe you care about her. Which makes this more complicated."

"Life is complicated. Get used to disappointment."

"If I find proof you’re working with demons – "

"You won’t. Because I’m not." Damien moved to his desk, pulling out demon attack reports. "But if you want to be useful instead of obstructive, help me predict their next move. They’re escalating. The capital will be hit within a week. I’d rather defend effectively than waste time on pointless investigations."

He was offering alliance. Temporary, suspicious, but practical.

Seria studied the reports, her tactical mind engaging despite her mistrust. "These patterns... they’re not random."

"No. Someone’s coordinating them. Intelligence we don’t understand, strategy we need to counter."

"And you want me to help you fight them instead of investigating you."

"I want you to prioritize actual threats over suspected ones." Damien met her eyes. "The demons are real. Your theory about me is speculation. Which deserves your attention more?"

Seria looked between him and the reports, conflict clear on her face. Finally, she sighed.

"I’ll help with demon defense. But I’m watching you, Valcrest. Every move. Every use of that shadow magic. And if I find proof you’re threat – "

"You’ll try to kill me. Yes, you’ve mentioned." Damien actually smiled slightly. "At least you’re consistent."

"Don’t mistake my cooperation for trust."

"Wouldn’t dream of it."

She left with the reports, still radiating suspicion but temporarily redirected.

[SERIA RELATIONSHIP: Hostile Monitor → Suspicious Ally (Temporary)]

[Investigation: Paused but not abandoned]

[WARNING: First sign of betrayal will trigger immediate hostile action]

Damien watched her go, then collapsed into his chair.

He’d postponed Elara’s examination. Redirected Seria’s investigation. Managed multiple crises simultaneously.

But these were delays, not solutions.

The Church would reschedule the examination. Seria would continue watching. The evidence of what he and Elara had done was undeniable.

Eventually, the truth would come out.

The question was whether he could position himself to weather the scandal when it did.

His hand went to his chest, feeling the demonic core’s steady pulse. The corruption had decreased after last night – 5.2% now, the lowest it had been in a while.

Elara was keeping him human.

And he’d do whatever necessary to protect her.

Even if it meant becoming the monster everyone already feared.
