Chapter 39: Light on Secrets
She had everything to fear.
The examination would expose her. The Church would know she’d given herself to Damien. The scandal would be catastrophic.
But backing down now would show weakness. And after last night, after choosing Damien completely, she refused to cower.
"As you wish, High Priest." She stood again. "Will that be all?"
Aldous waved dismissal, and Elara left with carefully maintained composure.
The moment she was alone in a corridor, panic set in.
She needed to contact Damien. Needed to warn him. Needed –
"Saintess Elara."
She spun to find Captain Seria Thornwood blocking her path. The warrior woman looked grimly satisfied.
"Captain Thornwood. I wasn’t aware you had business in the Church compound."
"I’m coordinating security for tomorrow’s charity dinner." Seria’s green eyes were sharp. "But I’m glad I ran into you. I have questions."
"I’m quite busy – "
"This won’t take long." Seria moved closer, voice dropping. "I’ve been investigating Lord Valcrest. His sudden appearance, his shadow magic, his convenient heroics. All of it suspicious."
"The High Priest already interrogated him – "
"The High Priest isn’t a soldier. I am. I recognize tactical positioning when I see it." Seria’s gaze was uncomfortably piercing. "Lord Valcrest has been systematically isolating you from proper support, encouraging rebellion, pulling you toward worldly corruption. Classic infiltration pattern."
"You overthink. He’s simply a respectful gentleman."
"Respectful?" Seria’s voice hardened. "Saintess, I’ve seen this before. Enemy agents use romantic attention to compromise targets. Make them feel seen, special, valued – then exploit that vulnerability for strategic advantage."
"Damien isn’t an enemy agent – "
"How do you know? What do you actually know about him beyond what he’s told you?" Seria stepped closer. "His shadow magic looks demonic. He kills with disturbing efficiency. He appears exactly when you’re vulnerable. And you’re defending him despite every warning sign."
Elara wanted to argue. Wanted to defend Damien properly. But Seria wasn’t entirely wrong – she didn’t know everything about Damien’s powers or their source. He’d admitted to keeping secrets.
But she knew his heart. Knew the way he looked at her. Knew the anchor bond between them that felt more real than anything the Church had ever offered.
"I appreciate your concern, Captain." Elara kept her voice level. "But my associations are my own business."
"Not when they compromise the kingdom’s spiritual leader." Seria’s expression was troubled rather than hostile. "Saintess, I’m trying to help. If Lord Valcrest is using you, if he’s working with the demons somehow, you need to know before it’s too late."
"He’s not – "
"Then let me investigate properly. Let me find evidence that proves he’s trustworthy." Seria’s voice softened slightly. "I want to be wrong about him. For your sake and the Aldric’s. But I need proof, not faith."
Before Elara could respond, Sister Catherine appeared. "Saintess, you’re needed in the healing ward. Multiple wounded from last night’s demon skirmish."
Elara seized the escape. "Of course. Captain Thornwood, we’ll have to continue this another time."
She hurried away before Seria could protest, her mind racing.
The medical examination this afternoon would expose everything. Seria was actively investigating Damien. The Church suspected corruption. And she could feel the changes in her own divine magic – undeniable evidence that something fundamental had shifted.
She’d crossed a line that couldn’t be uncrossed.
And she didn’t regret it.
But the consequences were coming faster than she’d anticipated.
---
Damien received the coded message from his spy network at noon.
Church ordering medical examination of Saintess. This afternoon. Full scope. Mother Superior overseeing personally.
He read it twice, feeling cold strategic thinking snap into place even as genuine concern flooded through.
They’d discover everything. The physical evidence of their night together. The changes in her divine magic from the anchor bond.
The scandal would be catastrophic for her.
[CRISIS DETECTED: Elara’s exposure imminent]
[Church will attempt to separate and punish subject]
[Recommended action: Intervention]
[WARNING: Direct intervention will escalate conflict significantly]
Damien dismissed the System’s analysis. He didn’t need calculations to know Elara was in danger.
He found his father in the study, reviewing demon attack reports.
"I need resources," Damien said without preamble. "The Church is moving against Elara. Medical examination this afternoon that will expose our relationship. I need to either stop it or manage the fallout."
Cornelius looked up, expression calculating. "Stop it how?"
"I don’t know yet. But I can’t let them punish her for choosing me."
"Noble sentiment. Strategically complicated." His father set down the reports. "If you intervene directly, you confirm the Church’s suspicions. They’ll move to isolate her completely, possibly imprison her for her own protection."
"Then what do you suggest?"
"Create bigger crisis that postpones examination. Or accept that scandal is coming and position yourself to weather it." Cornelius studied his son. "How committed are you to this woman?"
"Completely."
"Even if it costs you politically? Socially? Potentially your position as noble?"
"I said completely."
Cornelius was quiet for a moment. "Then we plan for scandal management rather than prevention. Build narrative before Church controls it. Position your relationship as romantic tragedy rather than corruption. Make the kingdom sympathize rather than condemn."
It was solid strategy. But it still meant Elara facing immediate consequences.
"There might be another option," Damien said slowly. "The demon attacks are escalating. If a major threat emerged this afternoon – something requiring all Church resources including the Saintess – "
"You want to stage a demon attack to postpone an examination?" His father actually looked impressed. "Bold. Morally questionable. Effective."
"I’m not staging it. I’m predicting it." Damien pulled out the intelligence reports. "Look at the pattern. They’ve been hitting every three days. Last attack was three days ago. They’re due to strike today or tomorrow. If I position intelligence suggesting this afternoon, the Church will mobilize defenses including Elara."
"And the examination gets postponed indefinitely." Cornelius nodded. "That works if the attack actually happens."
"Then we make sure it happens." Damien’s voice was cold. "Send word to our forces on the eastern perimeter. If they spot demon activity, engage immediately and send urgent request for Church support. Create the crisis we need."
"You’re manipulating a demon attack." His father’s tone was neutral. "That’s remarkably ruthless."
"I’m using available resources to solve a problem." Damien met Cornelius’s eyes. "Isn’t that what you taught me?"
"It is." Something like pride entered his father’s expression. "You’re thinking like a Valcrest. About time."
