Chapter 30: The Captain’s Suspicion
The charitable distribution ceremony was exactly as boring as Elara had predicted.
Three hours of Church officials droning about divine generosity while distributing food to the city’s poor. Noble families attended in their finest attire, performing public charity while privately calculating social benefit. Common folk waited in patient lines, grateful for assistance regardless of the pageantry surrounding it.
Damien stood in the noble section, maintaining appropriate attentiveness while his mind worked through more interesting problems. Demon attack patterns. His father’s intelligence reports. The growing corruption percentage that had ticked up to 5.4% despite careful power management.
And Elara, standing on the ceremonial platform in full Saintess regalia, blessing each recipient with golden divine light while Sister Catherine hovered like a particularly aggressive guard dog.
Their eyes met twice during the ceremony – brief contact, nothing scandalous, but enough to convey recognition and shared frustration with the tedium.
Then Damien noticed someone watching him with considerably more hostility than Sister Catherine’s usual disapproval.
A woman in military dress uniform, standing with the guard contingent. Mid-twenties, strikingly beautiful in a way that suggested both danger and discipline. Auburn hair pulled back in a severe braid.
Sharp green eyes that tracked his every movement with tactical assessment. Athletic build with curves that even formal military attire couldn’t fully conceal – the kind of physique that came from actual combat training rather than decorative sword lessons.
She wore captain’s insignia. House crest on her shoulder identified her as Thornwood – a rival noble family with military traditions and long-standing political tension with House Valcrest.
And she was staring at Damien like he was a threat requiring immediate elimination.
[NEW SUBJECT DETECTED]
[CAPTAIN SERIA THORNWOOD - Age 24]
[Status: Military Captain, Thornwood House, Hero’s Combat Instructor]
[Relationship to Hero: Close Ally, Potential Romance Route (Original Plot)]
[Current Disposition: Hostile]
[CORRUPTION DIFFICULTY: EXTREME]
[WARNING: Subject is highly suspicious of player and actively seeking evidence of wrongdoing]
Damien filed the information away. A second heroine, already positioned as hostile. Interesting complication.
The ceremony concluded with final blessings. As the crowd dispersed, Damien began navigating toward Elara’s exit route – not obviously, but positioned to create another "accidental" brief encounter.
He didn’t make it three steps before Captain Thornwood intercepted him.
"Lord Valcrest." Her voice was professional, but her hand rested on her sword hilt. "A word, if you have a moment."
Not a request. Damien adjusted his plans smoothly. "Captain Thornwood. Of course. How may I assist the city guard?"
"Privately." She gestured toward a side corridor away from the crowd.
Damien followed, aware that Aldric had noticed the interaction and was watching with interest. The hero apparently trusted this woman’s judgment enough to let her approach Damien alone.
The corridor was empty, lined with Church administrative offices currently closed for the ceremony. Captain Thornwood turned to face him, her posture that of a warrior evaluating an opponent.
"I’ll be direct," she said. "I don’t trust you. Your sudden proximity to the Saintess, your convenient heroics, your unexplained combat abilities – all of it raises questions."
"Questions you’re planning to investigate?"
"Already am investigating." Her green eyes were hard. "House Valcrest has a reputation for ruthless political maneuvering. Your father’s methods are well-documented. Now his heir suddenly appears with shadow magic, starts courting the kingdom’s most protected woman, and kills demons with suspicious efficiency."
"Suspicious because I’m competent?"
"Suspicious because it’s too convenient. Too perfectly timed." She stepped closer, intimidating despite being several inches shorter than him. "Aldric thinks you might be useful. I think you’re dangerous. And I’m very good at proving dangerous people are threats."
Damien studied her carefully. This wasn’t bureaucratic opposition like High Priest Aldous or earnest rivalry like Aldric. This was trained warrior’s assessment, someone who understood real threats and acted accordingly.
"What exactly are you accusing me of, Captain?"
"Nothing yet. But I’m watching. Every move you make, every power you display, every time you get near the Saintess – I’m documenting it." Her hand tightened on her sword hilt. "And when I find proof you’re working with demons or cajoling her for political gain, I’ll personally ensure you face consequences."
"Working with demons." Damien kept his voice neutral. "The ones I killed three dozen of? Those demons?"
"Could be misdirection. Kill expendable forces to gain trust, while actually serving whatever’s coordinating the attacks." She didn’t back down. "I’ve seen enemy infiltration before. You fit the pattern."
It was actually solid logic. Wrong, but not stupidly so.
"Let me offer alternative theory," Damien said calmly. "I’m a noble with unusual abilities who happened to rescue Church personnel because it was the right thing to do. No conspiracy, no demonic alliance, just effective action during crisis."
"And your relationship with the Saintess?"
"Is none of your business."
"It’s my business when it involves someone under my students protection." Seria’s voice hardened. "Aldric cares about her wellbeing. That makes it my business. And I don’t like what I see – you systematically isolating her from proper supervision, encouraging rebellion against Church authority, pulling her toward worldly corruption."
"Or freeing her from an oppressive institution that treats her as property rather than person." Damien smiled coldly. "Perspective matters, Captain."
"So does evidence. And I’ll find it." She stepped back, hand leaving her sword but posture remaining combat-ready. "Fair warning, Lord Valcrest – I’m not High Priest Aldous. I don’t fight with politics and social pressure. If you’re a threat, I eliminate threats. Permanently."
"Noted." Damien kept his expression pleasant. "Anything else, Captain? Or can I return to my tedious noble obligations?"
"Stay away from the Saintess. That’s not a request."
"Then it’s not something I’ll honor." He turned to leave. "But I appreciate the direct communication. Much more efficient than Church bureaucracy."
He walked away before she could respond, aware of her hostile gaze following him.
[NEW HEROINE: SERIA THORNWOOD]
[RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Active Antagonist]
[CORRUPTION DIFFICULTY: Extreme - Subject actively investigating player]
[NOTE: Converting enemy to ally/lover will require significant strategic planning]
[ESTIMATED TIME TO CORRUPTION: Unknown - Subject has strong loyalty bonds and deep suspicion]
This was the second heroine. The warrior woman who was supposed to fall for Aldric’s earnest heroism while serving as his combat partner.
Instead, she was investigating Damien with professional thoroughness and apparent determination to prove him dangerous.
The challenge was interesting. Elara had been isolated and starved for genuine connection – relatively straightforward corruption path. Seria was competent, suspicious, and actively hostile.
Converting her would require entirely different approach.
But first, he needed to not get arrested or killed by a highly trained military captain with access to investigation resources.
