Finally, Aldous spoke, his voice carefully controlled. "The Church will not approve any romantic relationship between you and the Saintess. We will oppose it through every means available."

"Then oppose it." Damien headed for the door. "But understand – you’re not fighting me. You’re fighting her choice. And she’s braver than you’ve ever allowed her to be."

"If you truly cared about her wellbeing, you’d walk away. Your association will destroy her reputation, compromise her position, make her life infinitely more difficult."

Damien paused at the door. The argument was actually compelling – his relationship with Elara would create problems for her.

But walking away served Aldous’s interests, not Elara’s desires.

"Her reputation isn’t yours to protect by destroying her autonomy," Damien said quietly. "If association with me causes problems, we’ll handle them together. That’s what actual care looks like – not convenient abandonment."

He left before Aldous could respond.

[SOCIAL COMBAT: VICTORY]

[Church authority challenged but not eliminated]

[Relationship with Elara explicitly forbidden by Church]

[WARNING: Continued association will create significant obstacles]

[REPUTATION: Enemy of Church Leadership]

Damien descended the tower stairs with his mind already working through implications.

The Church would oppose his relationship with Elara aggressively. They’d use social pressure, political leverage, probably orchestrate situations to separate them.

That was fine.

Forbidden longing was exponentially more intense than approved courtship. Elara’s defiance would create stronger bonds than comfortable acceptance.

Aldous had just made Elara’s corruption significantly easier by forcing it to be rebellion.

[CORRUPTION ANALYSIS: Accurate]

[Forbidden relationship increases emotional intensity]

[Shared enemy (Church authority) creates us vs. them dynamic]

[Estimated intimacy acceleration: 40%]

Damien emerged from the Church compound to find an unexpected figure waiting – Aldric, leaning against a wall with arms crossed.

"How’d it go?" the hero asked.

"About as well as interrogations typically do." Damien studied him. "You’re lurking outside interrogations now? That’s suspicious even for you."

"I wanted to talk. Away from Church ears." Aldric pushed off the wall. "Walk with me."

It wasn’t a request. Damien considered refusing, then decided information gathering was worth the time.

They walked through the religious district in silence until reaching a small public garden, relatively private.

"The High Priest is going to move against you," Aldric said bluntly. "Formally. He’s already drafting petitions to noble council, preparing accusations, building political pressure."

"I’m aware."

"And you’re going to fight it anyway."

"Obviously."

Aldric was quiet for a moment. "I don’t understand you. You’re intelligent, calculating, clearly capable of reading situations. You know pursuing the Saintess will create enormous problems. Why not walk away?"

"Why do you care?" Damien countered.

"Because – " Aldric struggled for words. "Because she deserves better than being caught between Church politics and whatever game you’re playing. If you actually cared about her, you’d make this easier, not harder."

"Easier for whom? The Church? They don’t want her happy – they want her controlled." Damien kept his voice level. "Walking away might be easier for everyone else. It wouldn’t be better for Elara."

"You don’t know that – "

"I know her better than you do." It was harsh but accurate. "You see the Saintess. I see Elara. There’s a difference."

Aldric’s jaw tightened. "And what do you see?"

"Someone brave enough to want her own life despite everything working against that desire." Damien met the hero’s eyes directly. "Someone who deserves the chance to choose, even if that choice is complicated."

"Choose you?" Aldric’s voice carried frustration. "The suspicious noble with dark powers and unclear motivations?"

"Better than choosing the earnest hero who puts her on a pedestal and calls it respect." Damien’s tone was cold. "At least I see her as human."

They stared at each other, tension crackling.

"I’m watching you," Aldric said finally. "If you hurt her – "

"You’ll try to kill me. Yes, you’ve mentioned." Damien turned to leave. "But here’s the thing, hero – you’re not watching for her protection. You’re watching because you want her yourself and you’re too noble to admit competing with me makes you jealous."

Aldric’s face flushed. "That’s not – I don’t – "

"Save it." Damien started walking. "Focus on the demon investigation if you want to be useful. Leave Elara to make her own choices."

He left the hero standing in the garden, frustrated and confused.

[HERO RELATIONSHIP: Antagonistic]

[ALDRIC STATUS: Romantic Rival (Unacknowledged) + Active Opposition]

[WARNING: Hero will attempt to "rescue" Elara from player influence]

Good. He’ll enjoy watching him fail. The hero’s earnest devotion and pedestal-worship would look clumsy compared to Damien’s genuine engagement with Elara as a person.

Competition would only highlight the difference.

---

That evening, a sealed letter arrived at the estate via Church courier.

Damien opened it to find Elara’s elegant script:

"They’ve forbidden me from seeing you. Mother Superior delivered the edict personally – no contact, no correspondence, no acknowledgment. I’m confined to compound except for official duties, with doubled supervision.

High Priest Aldous says you’re dangerous. That you’re corrupting me. That association will destroy my position.

He’s probably right about all of it.

I don’t care.

I’ll find a way to see you. Not sure how yet, but I will. They can forbid contact – they can’t control my thoughts or desires.

Be patient. Be careful. Don’t do anything stupid like climbing walls again.

-E

P.S. - I kissed you last night because I wanted to, not because you manipulated me into it. Important distinction."

Damien read the letter three times, feeling something warm and complicated settling in his chest.

She was actively defying Church authority. Choosing him despite explicit prohibition. Making it clear that her attraction was genuine choice, not manipulation.

[CORRUPTION MILESTONE: Active Defiance of Authority]

[Subject consciously choosing player over institutional control]

[Intimacy maintaining maximum level despite physical separation]

[FORBIDDEN LOVE STATUS: Active]

This was what he’d been working toward – Elara breaking free from the cage, choosing her own path, seeing him as worth the risk.

But reading her words, seeing her determination to maintain contact despite enormous pressure, he felt the weight of it differently than expected.

She was trusting him. Risking everything for this connection.

If he failed her, if the corruption consumed him and turned him into something that couldn’t care anymore...

He pushed the thought down. Not yet. Not while he still had emotional anchors. Not while Elara’s affection kept him human.

The demonic core pulsed in his chest, a constant reminder of what he was becoming.

But for now, he was still himself enough to appreciate what she was offering.

He burned the letter – too dangerous to keep – and began planning.

The Church had forbidden contact. Fine. He’d work around it.

Elara’s official duties included public blessings, healing ceremonies, charitable work. All public events where accidental encounters could happen. Where brief conversations could occur under watching eyes.

It wouldn’t be easy. It would require perfect timing and careful management.

But difficult was different from impossible.

And forbidden love that required effort was infinitely more valuable than approved courtship.

[QUEST UPDATED: Forbidden Romance]

[Objective: Maintain relationship despite Church prohibition]

[Difficulty: High]

[Reward: Accelerated corruption progress, deeper emotional bonds]

[Note: Risk and reward both increased]

Damien smiled coldly at the glowing interface.

The Church wanted to separate them.

They’d just made that separation into the most effective aphrodisiac possible.

Amateur mistake from Aldous. The High Priest understood authority but not psychology.

Prohibition created desire. Obstacles created investment. Shared defiance created intimacy.

The Church was accelerating Elara’s corruption while thinking they were preventing it.

And when they finally realized their error, it would be far too late.

She was already his.

They just hadn’t accepted it yet.
