Chapter 27 - 027 Spoils of War
"My money can’t be spent here. It needs to be verified," Lin Feng said directly.
"Huh? Little Tang, what’s going on?" Wang Kun asked the salesperson beside him, wanting to understand the situation. What did he mean by money that couldn’t be spent? If someone came with money to buy something, how could there be an issue with spending it?
"Wang... Wang... Manager, he’s using Euro cash, but the problem is... his Euros are in 500 Euro denominations, which I’m not familiar with..." Little Tang answered with a mix of embarrassment and grievance.
"What? 500 Euro denominations?" Wang Kun was also bewildered, thinking to himself that judging by this man’s appearance, and the fact that he was dressed in work clothes, he didn’t seem like someone who would have Euros, let alone 500 Euro notes. Those weren’t even widely circulated in Europe, and here this man had two stacks of them? Could they be counterfeit?
"Sir, please wait a moment. I’ll have someone from finance come down to count and verify it on the spot. Little Tang, quickly take this gentleman to the VIP lounge and offer him good service," Wang Kun gave an order, then picked up the phone to call the finance department, explained the situation, and asked them to come down quickly. He instructed Little Tang to treat Lin Feng well; being cautious in business is never a mistake.
Little Tang now felt like he was dreaming. If this man wasn’t insane, then he must be someone who casually walked around with several hundred thousand in cash, and in Euros, no less. It was just... too unbelievable.
Ding Wan’er spent some time in the restroom to calm down and think about what to say before coming out, but when she did, she discovered Lin Feng was gone. Just then, a salesperson approached her and invited her to the VIP lounge, mentioning that her friend was there. Without much thought, Ding Wan’er followed to the VIP lounge.
"Lin Feng, let’s find a car and head back," Ding Wan’er said upon seeing Lin Feng in the lounge, thinking that by changing the topic, the earlier matter need not be mentioned.
"I’ve bought a car. The finance people are about to come over. We can drive it home in a bit," Lin Feng turned his head and told Ding Wan’er, who had just emerged.
Buy... a car?
What did she mean by buying a car? Ding Wan’er was dumbfounded. Did Lin Feng really buy a car, and what kind? Did he have the money for it?
"Did you really make the payment?" Ding Wan’er was still somewhat in disbelief. If someone could afford a car, would they be working as a handyman at her school??? It made no sense.
"Yeah, I paid in Euros. Using cash made it a bit complicated," Lin Feng replied. "You didn’t specify which type, so I just bought one similar to your previous one."
"Yeah, cash? Where did you carry so much cash on you?" Ding Wan’er wondered. While the work clothes were somewhat loose, she hadn’t noticed Lin Feng carrying much.
"Not much, just two stacks of notes, 500 denomination Euros," Lin Feng said calmly.
Not much? Two stacks of 500 Euro notes would be nearly a million in Renminbi. And that’s considered ’not much’? How much would ’a lot’ be then? Lin Feng actually had money, and he was carrying around a hundred thousand Euros. What was he thinking?
Because of her family background, Ding Wan’er had seen plenty of wealthy people, but she had never encountered anyone who carried around a million in cash every day. Since it was unlikely that Lin Feng could have known what would happen today, this was an unexpected situation, but the fact that he carried so much cash indicated that it wasn’t prepared beforehand.
But the more she thought about it, the more incredible it seemed.
What was he thinking? Although the public security was still fairly good, it wasn’t to the extent that one would carry so much cash every day. He actually dared to bring that much cash out. Wasn’t he afraid of encountering criminals?
"How do you have so much Euro cash?" Ding Wan’er couldn’t help asking. She wanted to know where Lin Feng’s money came from. In fact, since Lin Feng had arrived, she hadn’t stopped inquiring about him, and she knew some of his background. Even Lin Family’s previous status didn’t seem like a super-rich clan in her eyes, much less now. How could he have so much money?
"It’s my spoils of war. I had quite a bit more, but I couldn’t bring it all back. So I only took a portion. I previously had no real use for it, so I just kept it hidden in my clothes. It just so happens it came in handy today," Lin Feng answered Ding Wan’er directly, but his mind drifted back to his life on the island, randomly reminiscing about the cave filled with spoils of war and the pile of various countries’ cash...
"What... what... spoils of war?" Ding Wan’er was speechless. Was this a joke? What era was it to still have battles? Was he treating her like a naive child? Yet, a thought crossed her mind that Lin Feng must have something he didn’t want to share, something he didn’t want her to know. Perhaps it was best not to pry...
Soon after, a few people entered the room: "Sir, are these large denomination Euros yours?"
"They are mine, what about them?" Lin Feng asked.
"Oh, good. We will start counting and verifying them in front of you now," a few people from finance said as they saw Lin Feng in the VIP lounge dressed in work clothes. They frowned, wondering how a person like him could come to their store to buy a car with cash, especially with such large denomination Euros. No matter how they looked at him, he didn’t look like someone with money.
Ding Wan’er, seeing their reaction, felt a bit uneasy inside, but calmed down after observing Lin Feng’s confident demeanor as they waited together.
The three finance department staff carefully recounted the money three times, and with Manager Wang Kun checking once more, they finally confirmed the car’s price and pushed the remaining amount toward Lin Feng. They had to be careful—after all, should there be even one counterfeit bill, they’d have worked a month for nothing.
When the three finance personnel exited the VIP lounge, they couldn’t contain their excitement. It was the first time they had seen someone pay for a car with such a large amount of cash.
"I didn’t dare say it inside, but can you believe that guy in the work clothes actually has so much money? Carrying 100,000 Euros in cash and roaming around, is he insane? Isn’t he afraid of getting robbed? My god, why couldn’t that 100,000 Euros be mine, then I could have taken out a mortgage to buy a house."
"As if you have 100,000 Renminbi to your name, and you’re dreaming of buying a house? What a pipe dream. But tell me, what do you think the relationship is between that young man and the calamitous beauty beside him?"
"What else could it be but lovers? Who else would go out in the middle of the night with a man? And I can’t figure out why he wore work clothes. Wasn’t he just making it hard for us? Who would imagine someone in work clothes could pull out 100,000 Euros in cash? They must be playing with us on purpose."
"Who knows if it’s some rich person’s weird habit, deliberately messing with the fragile nerves of us common folk? Ah, if only that beauty was my woman."
"Stop dreaming; a woman like that is out of our league. Damn, when I have money someday, I’ll also just smack people with cash, so goddamn satisfying."
.........
"Sir, here is the remaining amount, please take it." Little Tang was slightly nervous, his heart already boiling.
He had not expected this at all. Fortunately, he hadn’t lost his composure just now, otherwise...
What kind of world is this, to have such people in it!
While Little Tang was being careful, Manager Wang Kun efficiently asked Lin Feng to leave an address and contact information. Even though he had a hundred, a thousand thoughts racing through his mind, he had to suppress them for now.
With plenty of cars in stock, the two soon sat in the newly purchased Audi.
Sitting in the new car, Ding Wan’er felt as if she was dreaming, an unreal sensation, and had no idea what she was thinking all the way home.
Lin Feng drove the new car, dropping Ding Wan’er off at her home, parked the car, then got out to open the door for her and wished her a good night before turning to leave.
"Wait, take the car with you," Ding Wan’er, seeing the parked new car, quickly called out to Lin Feng.
"This car is to compensate you."
"When did I say I wanted it, I was just joking earlier..." Ding Wan’er blushed slightly, thinking to herself that this guy was taking it seriously. Although he helped her, there was no way she could make him compensate her with a car. What would that make her?
"Thank you for your help today. You don’t need to compensate with a car, but since you crashed mine, um... you’ll have to be responsible for driving me around until my car is fixed." Ding Wan’er thought about how Lin Feng actually crashed Li Wenkai’s car to help her, feeling a secret thrill despite being terrified at that moment. After spending the evening together, she found Lin Feng—though not talkative—a pretty decent person who was decisive and gave her an indescribable sense of security, which made her feel much more at ease and relaxed.
"No need to thank me; it’s nothing serious. So, what time should I come to pick you up tomorrow?" Whether it was giving away the car or now Wan’er declining it, Lin Feng was very casual and didn’t make much of it.
"7:30 is fine, I should get to school around 8 o’clock." Ding Wan’er said casually, then watched as Lin Feng agreed and left.
Back in her room, Ding Wan’er’s mind was in turmoil, contemplating all of the evening’s events. She found Lin Feng to be enigmatic, each interaction revealing a side of him that shocked her. The car crash, buying a car, the 100,000 bills...
And whether it was her asking him for compensation, or his offer to give her the car, or her refusal, his reactions were all so... calm.
It’s as if none of these were a big deal: crashing the car was nothing, buying a car, giving a car, her refusal—none of it seemed to matter to him, much like his reaction when he first came to the school, saying he wanted to be a teacher, and how he acted when she told him to go to logistics...
